Chef / Food YouTuber Frank Phạm: Breaking the Rules Within Familiar Recipes

Frank Phạm is a chef and a storyteller whose medium is food. He is known for his YouTube channel Culinary Frank and is the founder of Society Cafe & Dining. His life unfolds within a small society where people connect through flavor, sincerity, and simple pleasures. That small society includes his family, friends, colleagues, and the many guests who enjoy the dishes he prepares.

A Kitchen That Mirrors a Small Society

I once visited Frank’s little corner at midday. The heat was intense and my shirt was soaked with sweat, yet the time spent chatting with familiar faces there felt surprisingly comforting. The space is a blend of café and restaurant, designed with calm simplicity: a modest bar counter and a few sets of wooden tables arranged closely together. It carries the nostalgic warmth of visiting an old place with old friends, while also meeting a few new ones. The menu reflects the same spirit, filled with affectionate dish names like “Huy’s Dish,” “Thắng’s Dish,” “Thương’s Dish,” and “Lợi’s Dish.”

Frank’s years in Australia shaped an important chapter of his life before he returned to Vietnam to create a welcoming place for everyone. Australia gave him the opportunity to explore a wide range of cuisines, from European to Asian, and especially to experience the openness in combining ingredients. He learned that a good dish does not have to follow a strict traditional formula, as long as it makes sense and brings joy to the person tasting it. Restaurants, cafés, and dining spaces are not merely places that serve food. They are places where people meet, share, and open their hearts.

Indeed, food itself is a natural bridge. A chef and a diner communicate not only through words but also through flavors. Colleagues become like family, and many guests who once arrived as strangers eventually become close friends after a few visits. Relationships that begin through a meal can grow and become part of one’s life. That is why Frank named his restaurant “Society,” expressing the idea that his kitchen is a small society of its own. It gathers people of different backgrounds, ages, and personalities, all working together in a rhythm that creates dishes filled with emotion.

“I want guests to enjoy their meals,” Frank shares. “But more than that, I hope the food evokes a feeling—something familiar, a beautiful memory, or simply the sense that the cook put real care into it.” Many of his diners are long-time viewers of Culinary Frank. One shared that his recipes helped her take care of herself throughout her student years, then graduate, and eventually “win over” the partner who would become her spouse. A small story like that is enough to make a chef feel that his journey truly means something.

A Fried Rice Full of Memories

Anyone who has followed Frank’s channel for years will notice a certain affection he has for fried rice. To him, fried rice is not just a dish. It is a part of his childhood, a quiet joy that has stayed with him over time.

“Fried rice has been with me since I was a kid,” he recalls. “Whenever we had leftover rice, I would toss it in a pan with an egg, some scallions, anything I could find in the fridge. The feeling of turning something ordinary into something delicious always excited me.” Perhaps those small childhood experiments marked the beginning of his culinary journey, driven by curiosity and pure joy.

rice is lighter, drier, and usually cooked with fewer ingredients. Vietnamese fried rice, on the other hand, tends to be more flavorful, generously seasoned, and filled with a variety of ingredients. Different as they are, both cultures share the same value: harmony and mindful use of what is available.

Frank’s fried rice dishes may look simple, but each carries his distinct personality. His satay shrimp fried rice, for instance, is vibrant and full of life. The natural sweetness of seared shrimp blends with the richness of egg and the fragrance of scallions. Each grain of rice is fluffy, firm, and thoroughly seasoned, creating a flavorful base. Bean sprouts and sweet corn add crunch and freshness, making the dish refined yet approachable and deeply comforting.

Frank believes that a person’s temperament shapes the way they choose ingredients and balance flavors. He describes himself as someone who enjoys breaking rules, which is why he often pairs familiar ingredients with something unexpected. Despite his gentle demeanor, few people know he has a passion for vintage motorbikes, not for speed, but for the timeless beauty of their engines and the mechanical rhythm that echoes his own heartbeat each time he revs the throttle. That love of contrast and surprise shapes both his cooking style and his brand: a chef unafraid to experiment yet always grounded in harmony.

A Decade of Journey and Beyond

Frank is not only a chef and a culinary storyteller. He is also a family man. He speaks about love candidly: “We met when we were very young. Our love has passed through many phases, from difficult days to our early successes. My partner is truly the backbone, not only supporting me emotionally but also giving feedback, sharing ideas, and sometimes even pointing out the things I overlook.”

She is the person behind every photograph and video filled with emotion. She quietly nurtures their small family and supports every step of his culinary journey. Keeping a relationship strong for ten years is not easy, especially when both partners work in the demanding world of F&B. Yet their understanding and companionship make their bond increasingly resilient.

Despite the heavy workload, the two always make room for moments together. They often take long drives around the city, explore different neighborhoods, try new eateries, or go on road trips with friends. These small adventures allow them to keep discovering the world through food, people, and shared stories.

When asked about happiness, Frank answers without hesitation. “To me, happiness is doing the work I love, having the person I love beside me, and sharing all of that with others. I don’t know if this is the happiest time of my life, but it is certainly a beautiful stage, a response to the years I spent dreaming and building.”

For Frank, happiness is found not in the destination but in the journey: from childhood plates of fried rice to the warm kitchen of Society today, from the storytelling videos he shares online to the deep connections he forms in real life, from a young love just beginning to a lasting partnership of more than ten years. The road ahead is surely long, and many meaningful moments are waiting to be written.
