Selangor – Malaysia’s Vibrant Gateway
As part of Selangor Tourism Year 2025, Tourism Selangor, the official tourism promotion agency of Selangor, officially launched the “Surprising Selangor” campaign in Ho Chi Minh City. This campaign is an inspiring invitation for travelers to explore the unique and vibrant features of Selangor – a land where rich cultural heritage, charming natural landscapes, and lively urban destinations converge. The campaign reflects Selangor’s commitment to connecting more closely with visitors from ASEAN and around the world. We had the opportunity to speak with Ms. Chua Yee Ling about this campaign, its expectations, and the spirit that “Surprising Selangor” embodies.
“Selangor Has It All!”
If you have never heard of Selangor, you will be surprised to learn that Malaysia’s capital, Kuala Lumpur, lies entirely within Selangor – one of the country’s 13 states.
Selangor is Malaysia’s most populous state, with approximately 7–7.5 million residents, accounting for nearly one third of the national population. With its central location, convenient transport networks, Kuala Lumpur International Airport, and Port Klang, Selangor is the ideal gateway to explore Malaysia. From Vietnam, just under a two-hour flight, Selangor is perfectly suited for a short weekend getaway.
In reality, many international travelers still do not recognize Selangor, often only familiar with Kuala Lumpur. This is why the “Surprising Selangor” campaign was created, to clarify the connection between Kuala Lumpur and Selangor and help travelers confidently plan their journeys.
Ms. Chua Yee Ling, representing Tourism Selangor, shared: “Alongside the slogan ‘Surprising Selangor,’ we also have a local slogan: ‘Selangor Has It All,’ aimed at encouraging residents to explore the hidden beauty in their own land. From resort stays, camping at River and Glamp or The Stick, adventure tourism activities such as rock climbing at Gua Damai Park, hiking up Broga Hill, white water rafting in Kuala Kubu Baru, paragliding at Jugra Hill, to eco-tourism experiences at local farms and cultural exploration, Selangor offers endless options for all types of travelers. After experiencing Selangor, visitors can easily extend their journey to other destinations such as Malacca, Johor, Perak, or Penang.”
Indeed, Selangor truly has it all. Sky Mirror is a unique check-in spot where visitors take a boat out to the sea and admire sand that reflects the blue sky like a giant mirror when the tide recedes. It is an ideal location for artistic photography with family, supported by professional tours. Visitors can then enjoy fresh seafood at nearby fishing villages and explore Malaysia’s largest rice fields. The lush green fields of Sekinchan are sure to captivate anyone, particularly with the Rice Museum for families interested in local agricultural culture. A magical experience not to be missed is watching fireflies at Kampung Kuantan Fireflies Park. As night falls, hundreds of fireflies illuminate the trees, creating a sparkling scene that leaves unforgettable memories with Selangor’s pristine nature.
Selangor is not only attractive for its natural beauty but also for its rich cultural heritage. Malaysia is a multi-ethnic country woven from Chinese, Indian, Malay, and other communities. Culture enthusiasts can visit the distinctive Fo Guang Shan Dong Zen Chinese temple, the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Mosque, or the Batu Caves in Gombak – a famous Hindu temple built into limestone hills.
Tourism Promotion Strategy that Touches Every Heart
Ms. Chua Yee Ling further shared the tourism promotion strategies within Selangor Tourism Year 2025:
“First, we work closely with federal agencies to organize international trade promotion programs. During this trip to Ho Chi Minh City, a B2B meeting program is being held, providing opportunities for Selangor tourism product operators to meet local travel agencies directly. Through these meetings, both sides can develop suitable itineraries, such as a four-day three-night tour, offering more attractive options for Vietnamese travelers. Simultaneously, we focus on building our brand on social media. Prominent KOLs are invited to participate in campaigns and experience Selangor with their families. Through these trips, destinations are experienced firsthand, effectively spreading tourism messages online.
Notably, we are also expanding partnerships beyond traditional tourism councils and travel associations. New partners include schools, particularly those with parent clubs organizing trips for children, universities, and alumni groups who often need outbound travel for reunions. We design tailor-made travel packages for each group. A new focus group is retirees, especially the active “60-year-olds,” full of energy and passionate about travel. We encourage them to explore Malaysia, particularly Selangor, through customized leisure packages.
In addition, medical tourism is a growing area of interest and investment. Recently, we completed a medical tourism fair in Indonesia, introducing several Malaysian medical centers offering comprehensive health check packages. These services include routine health screenings as part of the travel journey. During the Ho Chi Minh City meeting, some travel agencies shared that they had developed packages specifically for the elderly, combining leisure and on-site health checks in Selangor. Visitors receive same-day results along with useful health information such as cholesterol levels and exercise advice. With a reputable healthcare system and professional doctors, Malaysia is gradually becoming an ideal destination for health tourism. This is one of the key messages we continue to emphasize in the future.”
It can be said that these strategies are notable for their multi-dimensional approach, carefully tailored to potential target groups. They are not only market-oriented but also human-centered, addressing needs, emotions, and touching the hearts of today’s travelers.
Every Local is a Tour Guide
Ms. Chua Yee Ling has lived and worked in Selangor for 20 years since graduating from university. Her deep connection is evident in the way she speaks about Selangor’s beauty, not with the tone of a tourism promoter but with the affectionate eyes of someone devoted to her homeland.
Alongside eco-tourism, Selangor actively develops community-based tourism. This means every local is encouraged to become a storyteller, sharing interesting places and inspiring travelers through their own lives. True beauty comes not only from landscapes but also from people. Through these experiences, visitors have the opportunity to connect and empathize with the local community. According to Ms. Yee Ling, “This bond creates the sweetest memories and is the reason why travelers want to return again.”
Ms. Yee Ling began by asking if we like durian and explained that it is currently durian season in Malaysia, with famous varieties such as Musang King and Black Thorn renowned worldwide. Selangor is leveraging this to promote tourism combining local culinary experiences and nature exploration. For an inspiring itinerary, visitors can start with eco-tourism in highlights such as Sekinchan, Sungai Besar, and Kuala Selangor.
When asked about a typical weekend for a local in Selangor, she laughed and replied: “A day exploring Selangor can start gently with a stroll in the beautiful Botanical Gardens – an ideal starting point, especially for those who love green spaces and a slower pace of life. Even if not a sports enthusiast, I enjoy walking and sightseeing, and wandering the gardens refreshes the mind and naturally connects me with Selangor’s land and sky.
After a quiet morning, a charming café is the next stop, where I can enjoy a warm breakfast. The cuisine here is very diverse. You can have kaya toast Nanyang-style with strong coffee at a kopitiam – a local Malaysian and Singaporean term for traditional Chinese-style cafés serving simple yet flavorful breakfasts – or try a flavorful Indian-style breakfast. Truly, there is something for every taste!
Later in the morning, I meet a few friends to chat, share stories, and catch up. If time permits, we may watch a movie at one of Selangor’s large shopping centers, which offer diverse spaces for shopping, entertainment, and lifestyle experiences such as Elmina Lakeside Mall, Sunway Pyramid, Utama Shopping Centre. As evening falls, I drive about an hour to Kuala Kubu Bharu, a charming small town. There, I enjoy dinner and explore distinctive local dishes. My day usually revolves around food from breakfast to lunch, coffee, and dinner, intertwined with memorable moments with friends and familiar Selangor scenery. For me, cuisine is not only a key cultural element of Malaysia but also a thread connecting experiences, making each journey meaningful and complete.”
With the hospitality and pride of local communities, Malaysia promotes tourism from within, starting from the hearts of its people and extending to the world. This is especially significant as Malaysia assumes the role of ASEAN Secretariat Chair from January 2025, affirming its position as a regional hub. In this flow, Selangor stands out as an ideal starting point for travelers to discover Southeast Asia through experiences that are both intimate and multi-dimensional. The “Surprising Selangor” campaign aims to welcome 8 million international visitors, celebrating cultural and natural beauty while inspiring exploration of this shared ASEAN land during a promising year.
